Governor Walz on Child Welfare Program Enhancements
As a gubernatorial candidate, Tim Walz responded to our survey questions about improving child protection practices and addressing racial disparities in the child welfare system.
Regarding practices, he agreed that it is important to stop interviewing children in the presence of their alleged abusers.
Regarding racial disparities, he suggested ways to reduce the disproportionate representation of Native and African American families in the system, including initiatives to develop culturally meaningful programs and services.
This would be a significant undertaking that would require engaging numerous stakeholders, researching best practices, funding proven programs, and creating new service options.
Two encouraging signs these ideas will get the priority they need are that, as Governor, Walz has re-launched the Children’s Cabinet and hired a highly qualified new Department of Human Services Commissioner, Jodi Harpstead.
